Do you have a favorite Walker memory?
It has to be Kara Walker’s exhibition My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love in 2007. We were at such different places in our lives back then, but as time passes we’ve only become more attached to the artist’s prolific, visceral, often grotesque, and always moving work. We’re passionate about sharing the myriad of Black contemporary art with reluctant and future art lovers, and that exhibition was a powerful example of how it can be done.
Why did you join the Walker?
When we first became members, as college students, we were creatives finding our place in the community. That connection deepened as we began serving on the Avant Garden planning committee, led by Board President Seena Hodges. She saw our ties to local artists and trusted us with her vision to include valued and diverse Twin Cities creatives in this major event. Avant Garden is undoubtedly the highlight of the year for its guests, but for us, it shows the ripple effect one event can have—connecting local artists with so many fruitful opportunities and passionate art advocates. Together we’re growing change right here at the Walker, investing in diverse artful citizens, for the future.
What keeps you coming back?
We love the Walker’s capacity to learn and grow. On each visit you have no idea what kind of experience you’re in for, depending on the work in the galleries, cinema, or theater. It’s always an adventure and you don’t leave the same person you were walking in.
