Why did you join the Walker?

I moved to Minneapolis from San Francisco a few years ago to pursue my PhD in chemical engineering at the U of M. I’m not an artistic person, but art, music, and theater are my escape from the scientific world. Although I was initially a bit skeptical about the caliber of the arts scene here in Minnesota, the Walker won me over on my first visit; it’s a beautiful place where I go to remind myself that I’m not just a grad student or an engineer but a member of a larger community.

Describe your most memorable Walker visit.

I often take out-of-town friends to the Walker to enjoy the exhibitions and energy, but one particular visit stands out. I planned an ad hoc scavenger hunt in the galleries for a close friend’s birthday. There were points for identifying items in the artwork, and the team with the most points had to buy treats for the losers afterward. It was a fun, fast-paced way to experience the art.

What are you into right now?

I’ve been exploring more feminist and female-created art. I haven’t seen the Guerrilla Girls exhibition yet but am looking forward to it. Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece is one of my favorite works that I first saw at the Walker.
