Drawn Here (and There): Non-Format
Kjell Ekhorn and Jon Forss
In anticipation of next Thursday’s lecture by Non-Format, we asked Kjell (Oslo) and Jon (Minneapolis) to answer a few of life’s most—and possibly least—pressing questions:
1. What have you been obsessing about?
Kjell: Since moving to Oslo in the summer I’ve been obsessing about finding a decent place to buy. The Norwegian government rewards people who borrow money to buy their own property and punishes those who rent and have savings in the bank.
Jon: The details. Always the details. It’s a curse.
2. What’s your most prized possession?
Kjell: If we ignore everything family related – it’s very likely to have a small apple symbol somewhere on it.
Jon: My house.
3. What are you reading?
Kjell: At the moment I’m reading The Gruffalo for the kids, by request, almost every night. There is something quite comforting about knowing every word and every minute detail of every drawing in a book so I see it more as a meditative exercise rather than a chore.
Jon: Having finished all of Ian Fleming’s James Bond books, I’m about halfway through reading 2001, 2010, 2061 and 3001 by Arthur C Clarke.
4. What’s one of your guilty pleasures?
Kjell: 86% cocoa chocolate.
Jon: Rarely feeling guilty.
5. What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Kjell: Any virtue that makes us believe we have a moral high ground from which to judge others.
6. What is one of the most unexpected influences on your design?
Kjell: Seeing our own work reproduced small in a book or a magazine has always been a puzzling experience. Sometimes it has shown us unexpected aspects of a piece of work that in return has influenced future projects – like some form of recycled graphic cannibalism.
Jon: Squirrel behaviour.
7. What were you doing before you responded to this questionnaire?
Kjell: I had a conference call with a client regarding an upcoming job.
Jon: Upgrading to Creative Suite 4.
8. What question do you wish we’d asked you?
Kjell: “Would you like a thousand dollars or a packet of colourful stickers?”
Jon: “If we asked Kjell which is the door to freedom, what would he say?”
