OKCIYAPI

A gathering place and welcoming site of reflection, Angela Two Stars’s sculpture Okciyapi (2021) makes poetic connections between land, water, language, and people. Her work focuses on Indigenous language revitalization, a process she describes as a healing medicine that strengthens Dakota culture and identity.
For Okciyapi (Help Each Other), on view in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, the artist has included a series of audio recordings of fluent Dakota and Lakota speakers. This collection features the voices of treasured elders sharing traditional stories, remembrances, anecdotes, and insights. An integral part of the sculpture, the recordings help connect us to past, present, and future generations through language and storytelling.
