What does a director of documentaries learn from a painter, and vice versa? Does it influence how they think about or make their own work? Matt Wolf, one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film,” interviews his friend Matt Connors, one of the artists featured in the exhibition Painter Painter.

Connors is a New York–based artist who uses painting and abstraction to pursue an open-ended and informal dialogue between form, style, material, and meaning. His works explore questions, problems (and problem-solving), and propositions rather than assertions or solutions, and draw from the history of painting as well as the fields of language, music, and design.
New York–based filmmaker and writer Wolf is currently developing an unconventional historical film with the seminal punk author Jon Savage based on his groundbreaking book Teenage. His previous works include the award-winning feature documentary Wild Combination, about the avant-garde cellist and disco producer Arthur Russell, which premiered at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival. He has produced and directed short documentaries for the New York Times and the series High Line Stories for the Sundance Channel. Wolf is a graduate of New York University’s Film School.
