At the first Acoustic Campfire of the season we’re excited to present two sets of music focused on sharing cultural traditions: Jayanthi Kyle and Alicia Steele singing songs from African American history; The Two Tap Trio with a set of traditional Irish tunes.
Introducing: Jayanthi Kyle (Black Audience, Gospel Machine, Jayanthi Kyle and the Crybabies), joined by Alicia Steele (Alicia Steele and the Endeavors)
Vocalists Jayanthi Kyle and Alicia Steele join together to perform and lead some simple Black Heritage songs, and create vocal pieces with the Open Field congregation.
Comes from: a deep fascination with simple songs in African American history, and finding joy in the power of voices joined together. We are happy to be strong black voices in Minneapolis!
Expect: an opportunity to raise your own voice and see how it might make you feel connected to the others around you.
Introducing: The Two TapTrio (Norah Rendell – song, AJ Srubas – fiddle, Brian Miller – guitar & bouzouki)
Two-time “Best Irish Vocalist” Norah Rendell, internationally acclaimed guitarist Brian Miller and fiddler AJ Srubas are the Two Tap Trio. Formed in 2007 and based in the Twin Cities, the Two Tap Trio mixes driving fiddle and flute duets with Norah’s acclaimed voice, underpinned by intricate guitar and bouzouki backing. A high caliber stage act, the trio performs at festivals and concert halls throughout the Midwest including the Milwaukee Irish Fest, Thunder Bay’s Canadian Celtic Celebration, NESD Celtic Faire and Irish Fair Minnesota.
Sounds like: Paddy O’Brien, Liz Carroll, Altan, traditional Irish music (more Chieftains or Natalie McMaster and less Drop-Kick Murphy’s)
Expect: toe tapping, waltzing, singing, sweet dance-based instrumentals and songs.
Good if you’re in the mood for: hanging out with your friends and family outside, enjoying a beer, outing that jig step you learned as a child or asking that girl you’ve been wanting to impress to join you in a little waltz on the lawn!
Excited by: Maya Angelou! She has to be one of the most brilliant women to have ever lived in this country – a gifted speaker, writer, performer, activist, singer, dancer and thinker. Though we won’t be singing any of her songs, I hope that what we do inspires people to make music themselves and be better people in general.
Find Jayanthi Kyle with Alicia Steele & The Two Tap Trio at Open Field on Thursday, June 19 from 8-10 PM. In case of rain, the program will take place in the Walker Art Center’s Garden Cafe.
