Drawing inspiration from a personal tale of a family member who, like many people, have mistakenly confused their medications, Deborah Adler conceived of a better packaging solution for prescription drugs as her graduate thesis project at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Target Corporation placed the ClearRx design into commercial service in 2005 with additional refinements made by product designer Klaus Rosburg. The ClearRx system relies on strong cues for differentiating prescriptions from one another, including: large-print labels; color-coded plastic rings to identify each family member’s medicines; a top label that quickly identifies the drug inside; a removable drug dosing and interactions card that also holds a magnifying sheet to aid reading for the impaired; and for oral medications, a plastic syringe dispenser to more accurately measure dosages.
