Situated adjacent to the Guthrie Theater along the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis, Gold Medal Park was an unusual public-private alliance between William W. and Nadine M. McGuire Family Foundation and the City of Minneapolis to create a new, 7.5 acre, urban park on a post-industrial site. Designed by Minneapolis-based oslund.and.assoc., the clean, simple formal geometry of the park is centered on a spiraling ramp that makes its way atop a 32-foot-tall mound. A reference to the Indian burial mounds found throughout Minnesota and especially along the Mississippi River, the hill is actually formed from the capped remains of contaminated earth from the site, which was once home to heavy industry.
