Grain Belt is a brand of beer produced in Minnesota, most recently by the August Schell Brewing Company. The name refers to the “grain belt” of the American Midwest, where much of the world’s supply of wheat, barley, corn, and other grains are grown. Around 1940, a large sign advertising the beer was erected on Nicollet Island in the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis. The sign remains in place today as a local landmark and an excellent example of the great-lighted signs of the twentieth-century city.
