Jackson Meadow is a unique housing development of approximately 64 residences near the village of Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota. With a landscape design by Coen Partners of Minneapolis and an architectural plan by David Salmela of Duluth, Jackson Meadow’s collection of crisp-white, wood-clad, pitched-roof, modern houses and open prairie-like setting creates a distinctive community for its residents. Although faulted by some critics for its overly consistent architectural vocabulary, the development is a rare matrix of modernist forms, sustainable landscape practices, and new urbanist-like principles knitted together in an unexpected, ex-urban setting. A large portion of the surrounding landscape on the 145-acre site is permanently conserved providing recreational opportunities for residents and ensuring that the land remains undeveloped for future generations.
