Arguably Minneapolis’ most famous musician, Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, created an unpronounceable symbol to replace his stage name in 1993. The merger of the male and female symbols and later dubbed the love symbol,'' this graphic cipher forthe artist formally known as Prince,” required his then-recording label Warner Brothers to produce thousands of CDs with a custom font for use in printed media. The love symbol would instantiate itself in a variety of objects and merchandise, most famously in the shape of Prince’s signature guitar. The no-name strategy, purportedly created to annoy Warner Brothers, lasted until his contract with the music label expired in 2000.
