Dave Kapell, a musician and songwriter, was suffering writer’s block while trying to compose a song. To solve this problem, he wrote interesting words on small scraps of paper that he could rearrange. To prevent the slips of paper from blowing around he mounted them to magnets and arranged them on the back of a metal tin. What started as a simple but ingenious solution to his own problem quickly found another use in the amusement and enjoyment his friends discovered by manipulating the words, creating their own “magnetic poetry.” His first kits sold in the Uptown area of Minneapolis and were an immediate hit, foreshadowing worldwide success.
