The Midtown Greenway is a 5.7-mile long bicycle and pedestrian trail that runs east and west through the City of Minneapolis, largely uninterrupted by automobile traffic. Located in a trench created for a former commercial railway line in the late 1800s, this “bike highway” is considered one of the unique features in the city’s acclaimed network of bicycle trails and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Ideas for future expansion of the trail across the Mississippi River to St. Paul and the introduction of mass transit such as light rail have been discussed since the first segment opened in 2000.
