Frank Mars was born in 1883 in Hancock, Minnesota, and later moved to Minneapolis where he founded the Mar-O-Bar Company, which manufactured chocolate candy bars. In 1923 he introduced his son Forrest’s idea, the Milky Way candy bar, which soon became a best-selling product. In 1924, the Milky Way bar, which sold for a nickel, was introduced nationally and earned $800,000 in sales that year. The original Milky Way bar came in two flavors, chocolate and vanilla, and was made of malted nougat topped with caramel and covered with milk chocolate. Contrary to popular belief the name derived from a famous malted milk drink of the day and not the galaxy. In 1926, Mars relocated the business to Chicago.
