Graphic designer Lance Wyman, perhaps best known for his logo and symbols for the Mexico City Olympic Games of 1968, was commissioned by the Minnesota Zoo to create a new logo in 1981. A pictogram of a moose, an animal indigenous to Minnesota, was fused to the letter M to create its memorable mark. Other animal icons are used to identify distinct habitats and trails, including: a whale for the Ocean Trail, a toucan for the Tropics Trail, a beaver for the Minnesota Trail, a monkey for the Discovery Trail, and a camel for the Northern Trail. A custom display typeface was also created based on the M from the Zoo’s logo.
