The Naniboujou Club, which is now a lodge, was founded along the shores of Lake Superior just past the town of Grand Marais. The unique architecture includes a stunning 30-by-80-foot great room, which now serves as the inn’s dining hall. The decorative motif of the club is on full display in the space, which includes a massive rock fireplace about 20 feet high, surrounded by colorfully painted walls and tray ceiling. Created and hand-painted by French artist Antoine Gouffee, the room’s motif freely interprets traditional Cree Indian patterns and mixes them with other Native-American inspired designs, creating an utterly unique, nearly psychedelic version of Art Deco.
