Skywater is an ensemble of two cabins designed for Joseph and Dagmar Beach and situated along the beautiful bluffs of the St. Croix River on the Minnesota and Wisconsin border. The original cabin (pictured) is a sod-roofed structure, one of several earth-sheltered projects the firm would produce, sited about 150 feet above the river, rendering the place nearly invisible. Lisl and Win Close designed a two-room cabin and were faced with a modest budget of $50 for furnishings, which included a refrigerator made from a metal trashcan embedded in the wall and simple but ingenious furniture, such as a chair made from fir plywood with a seat back of clothesline. A second cabin on stilts was added in 1963. The Beach family sold Skywater in the early 1970s to its creators.
