Shoe merchant Charles Beckman created the Red Wing Shoe Company in the small river town of Red Wing, Minnesota in 1905, to help fill an unmet demand for footwear designed for the rigors of working in industries such as logging, mining, construction, and farming as well as boots for the U.S. military. Among its many innovations were the introduction of the steel toe to help prevent injuries, the use of oil-repellent leathers for the petrochemical industry, double layers of leather for mining boots, and softer, more flexible soles for lighter, interior work. Despite its blue collar roots, the Red Wing brand’s reputation for durable construction, American-made production, and the authenticity of its heritage designs have made it an iconic shoe for today’s urban hipsters.
