In 2002 the Design Institute at the University of Minnesota asked six design teams to make a proposal for a typeface for the Twin Cities. Erik van Blokland and Just van Rossum of LettError based in The Hague won the competition with their proposal called Twin. Using what they call a “Panchromatic Hybrid Style Alternator,” a randomizing software, they were able to create 10 fonts in a typeface family that is characterized by its rounded and script-like strokes. A further feature of the typeface is an Internet-enabled version whose base form is altered depending on changing data or information about the city, such as its weather, a particularly common topic of conversation amongst the Cities’ citizenry.
