Jon Forss and Kjell Ekhorn of Non-Format, a design studio based in Oslo, Norway, and St. Paul, Minnesota, created the Drop Matrix identity for Visuelt, a Norwegian design competition. Translating a dot-based typography into three-dimensional, spherical metal balls, Rodney Forss created an electromagnetic device allowing each ball to remain in place until released. The simultaneous release of the balls being dropped into liquid and powdery surfaces was captured on a high-speed video camera by cinematographer Jake Walters. The resulting effect, reminiscent of Harold Edgerton’s stroboscopic still images, creates an abstract typographic ballet.
