Public Tours of the Walker Art Center in May Offer Chance to See the New Building and Exhibitions

Visitors to the Walker Art Center in May get a chance to take public tours of the new building designed by Herzog & de Meuron, as well as take gallery tours of the seven permanent collection exhibitions on view. Patrons can also participate in a culinary arts tour and workshop in conjunction with Kitchen Window Cooking School on Saturday, May 21, 10 am-3 pm. With the introduction of Target Free Thursday Nights, the Walker brings back its popular Better Looking gallery talks with a tour of the new building led by Walker Director Kathy Halbreich on Thursday, May 26, at 7 pm.

Gallery admission is $8 adults; $6 seniors (65+), $5 student/teen (with ID), and free to Walker members and children 12 and under. Admission is free with a ticket to a same-day Walker event, $4 with a ticket stub up to six days after an event. Gallery admission is free to all every Thursday evening from 5-9 pm and on the first Saturday of each month. Target Free Thursday Nights are made possible by generous support from Target. Free First Saturdays are sponsored by Coldwell Banker Burnet. Media sponsorship for Free First Saturdays is provided by WCCO-TV.

May Public Tours

Walker Tour Guides lead public tours every Thursday and Friday at 1 and 6 pm, Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm. A variety of topics are offered, including the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, exhibitions, and the architecture of the building. Saturday and Sunday 2 pm tours are of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The Art of Architecture

Join a guided tour of the architecture of the expanded Walker Art Center on Saturdays and Sundays at 12 noon. Free with gallery admission.

Movie Mavens

Let’s go to the movies! Families are welcomed back to Free First Saturday with the artful films of the Girls in the Director’s Chair. Catch several shorts on the silver screen, and learn what kind of camera action is happening among young women filmmakers living in Minnesota. Then it’s your turn to create a movie! Marjorie Thieman, a film and video artist living in Minneapolis, will show you how to make a moving picture from paper and wheels, an idea based on a 19th-century toy called a Phenakistoscope. Before becoming an official film buff, you’ll need to take a guided tour of film works in Shadowland: An Exhibition as a Film. All activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Walker is partnering with Kitchen Window Cooking School to offer a unique combination tour/cooking class. Walker Guide and Kitchen Window employee Becky Coate leads an interactive and educational tour of the new Walker before heading to Kitchen Window’s Cooking School & Event Center to enjoy a global lunch with Executive Chef Scott Rosenbaum. The menu will hail from the homelands of some of the artists viewed at the Walker. Continue discussing the tour while feasting on some tantalizing dishes!
