“[Black Dice is] one of the most conceptually inscrutable and sonically inventive bands currently in existence.” —Stylus Magazine
“Bucking the trend of indie heavyweight wankery, this marriage of German glitch-poppers Notwist and Anticon avant-hoppers Themselves [13 & God] isn’t masturbatory (Trans Am vs. F***ing Champs), boring (Tortoise vs. The Ex), or half-assed (Jello Biafra vs. anyone).” —CMJ
“With a buzz that can be heard in the afterlife BOTW have successfully livened up the NYC rock scene in a sincere joyous way.” —Tokion Magazine
The Walker Art Center presents an evening with three fearless innovators in avant-noise, hip hop/electronica, and rock music—Black Dice, 13 & God, and Blood on the Wall, Saturday, September 24, at 8 pm. The first in a season-long series of musical double bills, the Walker presents artists whose newest works are as at home in a theater as they are in a club. Experimentalists in avant rock, pop, folk, and otherwise unclassifiable genres perform in the intimate setting of the William and Nadine McGuire Theater, allowing for close listening by the audience and the full sound capabilities of a state-of-the-art theater. Black Dice’s latest release, Creature Comforts (DFA Records), reveals subtle inflections of this Brooklyn-based three-piece band’s evolving sound—no-wave, art rock, post-noise, avant-psych—but is forged in an undeniably modern composition style. Tightly orchestrated but leaving ample room for unexpected shifts during live performances, their minimalist take on symphonic noise is laced with propulsive beats, swooping guitars, and a near-shamanistic frenzy of sonic textures that is at once transcendent and brutal.
Germany’s electronic futurists the Notwist converge with Anticon label collective’s notorious hip-hop philosophers Themselves as supergroup 13 & God. Complementary and distinctive, lush melodies meet chaotic free rap—idiosyncratics for a new age.
With kudos from the likes of Thurston Moore and Calvin Johnson, Brooklyn’s favorite brother, sister, plus one trio Blood on the Wall “shakes up well-worn rock archetypes without sacrificing the bombast of a screeching pick slide.” (Time Out New York)
Tickets to Black Dice+13 & God + Blood on the Wall are $15 ($12 Walker members) and available at walkerart.org/tickets or by calling 612.375.7600.
Music starts at 8 pm for this all ages performance.
