As the citywide PEACE (Public Engagement and Community Empowerment) Games, a two-week Olympic-style festival of arts and athletics running from July 31 to August 14, nears its close, the Walker hosts the PEACE Games Arts Showcase, highlighting some of the best young and adult artists from the North side of Minneapolis. Headlining the event will be Edupoetic Enterbrainment, a spoken word outfit with a dose of old school hip-hop aesthetics and down home truth telling.

North Minneapolis—zip code 55411—is known to much of the Twin Cities only through news coverage of its struggles with violent crime. But the reality of the community is more complex. While nearly two-thirds of its residents are considered low-income, many falling below the poverty line, North Minneapolis’ wealth is plentiful: nearly 50% of the people who live there are under 18, the highest concentration of youth anywhere in the city.

Young people will compete in nine sports and three artistic disciplines—dance, spoken word, and visual art—at venues throughout North Minneapolis to showcase their skills and enjoy both cooperation and competition. By hosting the PEACE Games Arts Showcase, the Walker continues its deep commitment to youth, as evidenced by the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council (WACTAC) and its dedication to civic engagement. The Walker is pleased to be part of this summerlong celebration, and invites you to join in a salute to peace—and art—in North Minneapolis. Copresented by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and the PEACE Foundation.

Note: On Thursday, August 11 from 1–4 pm, the Walker will host a free day of art-making, games, sports activities, food, and tours for children ages 3–18. Participants will be bused from over 40 Minneapolis parks to enjoy the day’s festivities. Extending from the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden to the Walker Art Center’s new expansion, the World Showcase will be an one day opportunity for over 2,000 young people to connect with contemporary art.
