The Walker Art Center and Minneapolis Institute of Arts Team Up for Series of Tours That Explore Each Museum's Collections and Shared Histories

The Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts present Conversations Between Collections, a series of tours through the collections of both institutions to tell the story of their entwined histories. On Thursday, September 7, at 6 pm (repeated on Sunday, September 10, 2 pm; and presented at the MIA on Thursday, September 14, 6 pm, and Sunday, September 17, 2 pm), is the tour Where is the Jade Mountain? The Shared History of the Walker and MIA Collections. This program explores the early works collected by Walker founder and namesake T. B. Walker, several of which now reside in the MIA’s galleries. On Thursday, October 26, at 6 pm (repeated on Sunday, October 29, 2 pm; and presented at the MIA on Thursday, November 2, 6 pm, and Sunday, November 5, 2 pm), is the tour Over the Top: Baroque Art Past and Present. This tour examines how the 17th century baroque style of artistic excess continues to be used by contemporary artists, such as in the Walker’s upcoming exhibition Heart of Darkness (opening October 21) and the MIA’s A Passion for Paintings: Old Masters from the Wadsworth Atheneum (opening October 8).

For more information, call the Walker at 612.375.7600 or the MIA at 612.870.3140. Tours are offered twice at each museum. Free with gallery admission.

Today, they are on view not at the Walker, but in the galleries of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. This introductory tour winds through the collections of both institutions to tell the story of our entwined histories.

The bold colors, lights and shadows, and dramatic stories employed by 17th-century artists painting in the baroque style are not lost to history. Contemporary artists are drawn to a similar aesthetic of theatrical extravagance. These tours explore artistic excess in the exhibitions A Passion for Paintings: Old Masters from the Wadsworth Atheneum at the MIA and Heart of Darkness at the Walker.
