Celebrate the Moving Image at the Walker Art Center's Free First Saturday in March

Families are invited to celebrate filmmaking and visionary women throughout the day at the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday event

, from 10 am–3 pm Saturday, March 1. Featured events include Girls in the Director’s Chair, a series of films by Minnesota girls ages 8–18, part of this year’s Women with Vision festival; two art-making activities led by Project Girl, Wisconsin’s first girl-led art-based initiative; gallery spotlight talks for the exhibition Present Tense: Photographs by JoAnn Verburg; and a Best Buy Digital Imaging Booth where visitors can get their picture taken while sitting in the director’s chair.

Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 am–3 pm. Gallery admission is free from 10 am–5 pm on Free First Saturday.

Free First Saturdays are for Families!

Activities recommended for kids ages 6–12.

Art-Making for the Entire Family: Button Mania, 10 am–3 pm

Create a button and make your message known! Using old magazines, collage materials, and button makers, express how you see the world with a meaningful quote, catchy phrase, or cool design. Led by Project Girl.

Art-Making for the Entire Family: What’s Your Thinking Space?, 10 am–3 pm

Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab
Thinking spaces are the places we go to disconnect from the media and reconnect to ourselves, our friends, the natural world, and our imaginations. Where do you do your best thinking? Fill a box with collaged images that inspire your creativity. Led by Project Girl.

Film: Girls in the Director’s Chair

3 pm: For ages 13 and older, due to mature subject matter

Part of the annual Women with Vision film festival, this showcase of works created by Minnesota girls ages 18 and under ranges from animation and documentaries to social commentary.
