Put your party hats on and bring the family to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday event

Birthday Bash

from 10 am–3 pm Saturday, June 7. The day’s events are also part of Minneapolis MOSAIC 2008, a citywide festival celebrating the breadth and diversity of the local arts and cultural scene. Featured programs include a performance and workshop by Ragamala Music and Dance Theater, a local company dedicated to preserving the South Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam while using it as a springboard for innovative choreography; an art-making activity creating sculptures inspired by the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry; a Best Buy Digital Imaging Booth photo opportunity; a family flag-making art activity; and an African drumming workshop. Photos taken of families during the day by a Walker staff photographer will be projected at the MOSAIC 2008 kickoff party later that evening at the State Theater.

Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 am–3 pm. Gallery admission is free from 10 am–5 pm on Free First Saturday.

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
The first of three outdoor Free First Saturday programs is part of the Walker’s summerlong extravaganza commemorating the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden’s 20th anniversary. Savor an array of live music, dance, and art-making activities during this special birthday event, part of Minneapolis MOSAIC 2008, a citywide festival celebrating the breadth and diversity of the local arts and cultural scene.

Art-making for the Entire Family: Catch a Cherry, 10 am–3 pm

Design a toy inspired by the fountain-sculpture Spoonbridge and Cherry, by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. Led by artist-instructor Susan Brown.

Art-making for the Entire Family: Family Flags, 10 am–3 pm

Fly your colors over the Garden and tell the Twin Cities what’s unique about your family with a flag that displays the symbols of your heritage and what is important to you today. Led by artist-instructor Betsy Dollar.

Best Buy Digital Imaging Booth: A Minneapolis Portrait, 10 am–3 pm

Smile—it’s the 150th birthday of Minneapolis and the state of Minnesota! Get your snapshot taken and see it projected at the State Theater later that evening during the kick-off party for MOSAIC 2008.

Dance Performance: Ragamala Music and Dance Theater, 11 am

Belvedere sculpture
Discover Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form from southern India, with Ragamala Music and Dance Theater. Blending dance, music, and poetry, Ragamala’s work provides a bridge between cultures both ancient and modern. After the show, learn some moves in a workshop led by members of the company.

African Drumming Workshop, 2–3 pm
