Minnesota Artists Take Center Stage at the Walker Art Center's Free First Saturday in February

Families are invited to get to know a host of artists and art organizations with the help of mnartists.org—the Walker Art Center’s online program that supports Minnesota’s creative community—at the Free First Saturday event

A Community of MN Artists!

, from 10 am–3 pm Saturday, February 7. Events include a performance by Michael “the Hook” Deutsch, a one-handed, one-hooked piano player extraordinaire, presented by VSA Arts of Minnesota; a lesson in hip-hop moves influenced by West African dance and music with Universal Dance Destiny; a woodblock printing activity with Highpoint Center for Printmaking; an ice-carving demonstration by sculptor Zoran Mojsilov; a screening of homegrown animated flicks; a photo opportunity with Bonnie Fournier’s Smooch! Project, and a community art fair showcasing a variety of local art organizations.

Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 am–3 pm. Gallery admission is free from 10 am–5 pm on Free First Saturday.

Art-Making for the Entire Family: Inky Fingers, 10 am–3 pm

Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab
Create a colorful woodblock print with Highpoint Center for Printmaking. Mix inks, take a turn at the press, and watch carving demonstrations by local artist Jeanne McGee.

Community Art Fair, 10 am–3 pm

Cargill and General Mills Hennepin Lounges
Learn what local art organizations—ArtStart, Juxtaposition Arts, Free Arts Minnesota, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, Twin Cities Youth Media Network, and Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre—have to offer. Stop by each organization’s table to pick up an art-making activity and program information.

Artist Demonstration: Ice, Ice, Baby, 10 am–3 pm

Watch local sculptor Zoran Mojsilov turn a large block of ice into a work of art using chisels, mallets, a chainsaw, and lots of elbow grease.

Photo Activity: The Smooch! Project, 10 am–3 pm

Film: Homegrown Animation, 10 am–3 pm
