Field Day at the Walker

, Thursday, August 27, 11 am–10 pm, a daylong extravaganza for and by Minnesota artists, musicians, writers, poets, and community members. Members of mnartists.org receive free admission to the Walker Art Center galleries. Activities include a mall where artists can meet and network with representatives from mnartists.org, as well as other arts organizations; a mnLIT Picnic, hosted by Geoff Herbach and Andy Sturdevant, featuring readings of poetry and flash fiction by winners of mnartist.org’s past mnLIT competitions; a screenprinting workshop with local fashion designers Calpurnia Peach; Greenspace Games, where registered teams can compete in various lawn sports, such as kickball; and a Skyspace/Soundspace concert in the James Turrell Sky Pesher, 2005 installation by local buzz band Solid Gold.

Featured organizations include Springboard for the Arts, Minnesota Public Radio, ARP!, the _Onion/Twin Cities Decide_r, ARThouse, Northern Lights, Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Walker Art Center, College of Visual Arts, and mnartists.org and its members.

11 am–12 noon: Kid-friendly Dance with Guest Artist Sarah Jacobs

FlatPak House

Dance artist Sarah Jacobs presents a fun-filled hour of creative movement and kinetic play, especially tailored to engage young children. Families with children of all ages are welcome to join in and burn off some pre-nap energy.

12 noon–1 pm: mnLIT Picnic

FlatPak House

Geoff Herbach of the Electric Arc Radio players and author of The Miracle Letters of T. Rimberg team up with artist/writer/Salon Saloon creator Andy Sturdevant to host a matinée event in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. They will be joined by authors of mnartist.org’s mnLIT competition for live readings of their winning flash fiction and poetry compositions.

11 am–4 pm: Family Art-making Workshop and Arty Pants Scavenger Hunt

Kids are mnartists too!

Families are invited to stop by the FlatPak House in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden to nurture the artist within by making a cool, personally designed sketch pad. (Materials will be provided.)

Scavenger Hunt:

Field Day’s family visitors are invited to traipse through the Garden all afternoon, to hunt down fine (and not-so fine) arty treasures tucked amid the greenery and artwork.

1–5 pm: Greenspace Games

Whether you go in for hardcore tactics or free-for-all antics, join the artistically (and not necessarily athletically) inclined for lawn sports in the Walker’s west-side park. Recruit your own team to challenge rivals in an organized kickball tournament or show off in a pickup game of badminton. Register teams online at mnartists.org/greenspacegames. Uniforms and other creative displays of team spirit are encouraged. There will be prizes, trophies, and athletic glory for winners and loser alike.

1–5 pm Remake, Revamp . . . Again

The fashion line Calpurnia Peach—a collaboration between Luci Kandler and Ashley Wokasch—has been a hit at Minneapolis’ annual Voltage: Fashion Amplified show. Extending their summer screenprinting workshop to include Field Day, Calpurnia Peach helps participants design a personal emblem of summery good times, mnartists.org, and Field Day for screenprinting on clothing brought from home.

3 pm: Open Eye Figure Theatre

The artists of Open Eye Figure Theatre present a puppet show sure to delight children and adults alike. Come to the Flat Pak House to see a sampling of the performances in this summer’s “Driveway Tour” series by this acclaimed Minneapolis theater company.

5:30 pm Minnesota Artist “Class Photo” Photo

The Minnesota arts community is invited to gather on the Walker greenspace for a group photo. Not to be missed for anyone who is part of the state’s vibrant arts culture.

8:30 pm: Skyspace/Soundspace: Solid Gold

Summer winds down in style with a free experimental performance by this trio, which creates gorgeous collisions between digital and analog instrumentation by mixing heavy beats with surprising twists on Americana.
