Families Can Work Hard at Having a Day of Fun at Let's Play!, the Walker Art Center's Free First Saturday in February

Toy around with design and architecture to transform everyday materials into spaces for hoopla and hullabaloo at the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday event

Let’s Play!

, from 10 am–3 pm Saturday, February 6. The day features art-making activities where guests help transform the Cargill Lounge and Bazinet Lobby into play zones with the help of designers and educators from the University of Minnesota College of Design and D.E.M.O. (Design Education Modus Operandi). Other highlights include a Landscape Re-Mix art-making activity led by landscape design studio rosenlof/lucas, a gallery I-Spy adventure in the exhibition Benches & Binoculars, and a youth performance showcasing the action-packed skills of The Playground Crew.

Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 am–3 pm. Gallery admission is free from 10 am–5 pm on Free First Saturday.

Art-Making for the Entire Family: Playscapes, 10 am–3 pm

Bazinet Garden Lobby and Cargill Lounge
Build an installation with candy, balloons, and cardboard to alter the Walker’s lounges into fun-filled play zones. Led by designers and educators from the University of Minnesota College of Design and D.E.M.O. (Design Education Modus Operandi).

Art-Making for the Entire Family: Landscape Re-Mix, 10 am–3 pm

General Mills Hennepin Lounge and Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab
Join members of the Minneapolis-based landscape design studio rosenlof/lucas to draw on the world. Trace your view of the landscape as seen through a Walker window, recreate it in the Art Lab using color transparencies and markers, and then view the project large-scale using an overhead projector.

Gallery Activity: I-Spy, 11 am–1 pm

Perlman Gallery
How many artworks can you find through the lens of a binocular? Meet a tour guide in the exhibition Benches & Binoculars for a fun game of I-Spy.

Performance: The Playground Crew, 1 pm

Cinema
Join choreographer/dancer Leah Nelson and The Playground Crew, a group of youth from the YWCA Cityview Beacon afterschool enrichment program, as they showcase their jump roping, beat boxing, tap dancing, and basketball skills.
