Walker Art Center Hosts a Studen Open House: Get Scrappy Featuring Maria Isa and Muja Messiah as Villa Rosa

Minneapolis, October 7, 2011— The Walker Art Center hosts its annual Student Open House: Get Scrappy, on Thursday, October 27. The Walker’s annual celebration for students is inspired this year by the new exhibition Graphic Design: Now in Production and its showcase of designers-as-doers. Put in some time on the production line at a bookmaking workshop led by Crystal Quinn and Aaron Anderson (from the erstwhile artists’ cooperative Hardland/Heartland) using Xerox copiers, Letraset transfer type, and other supplies—then pick up one of the collectively made books at the end of the evening. Give and get new and undiscovered tunes at a music-mix exchange, and stop by the Art Lab to make covers for your CD or cassette mixes.

The evening’s musical guests are MC/singer/actor/activist Maria Isa and Muja Messiah, a veteran of the Minneapolis hip-hop scene, who join forces as Villa Rosa. The duo’s debut album, Blue Diamond Island, blends Latin sabor, reggae, and hip-hop in songs laced with Spanish lyricism, political satire, and outtakes from daily life.

Student Open House is presented by the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council (WACTAC).

Since 1994, the Walker Art Center has been the innovative leader in teen programming, providing cultural institutions around the world with a successful model for engaging teenagers. The mission of Teen Programs is to connect teenagers to contemporary art and artists. The Walker was the first art museum in the country to devote full-time staff to working with and building teen audiences.

In recognition of its leadership role in the field, Walker Teen Programs has been chosen as a partner in a three-year research grant, awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, along with The Whitney Museum, The Contemporary Art Museum Houston, and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. This grant serves to fund research on the long term affects of teen programs on alumni in regards to their continued value and connection to the arts, long-term benefits, and careers in the arts and museum fields; and the impact the program and alumni have on the institution itself.

Admission to the Walker is free for teens ages 13-18 made possible by Wells Fargo.
