Minneapolis, May 15 2013 –Today the Walker Art Center launched a new and groundbreaking website and free mobile app for the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden as part of its 25th anniversary this summer: http://walkerart.org/garden. Designed and developed by the Walker’s award-winning New Media Initiatives and Design departments, the website has been completely revamped and now includes a downloadable app for smart phone users to explore the Garden. The fully responsive web app helps visitors navigate the Garden using GPS location technology. Visitors can use the app to view audio and video content about the sculptures on view, explore various histories of the Garden’s fascinating past, learn fun facts about the art, and listen to “Community Voices”—short interviews recorded in the garden with community members, first time visitors, and local figures such as Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, sharing personal stories and reflections on the Garden’s iconic status in the Twin Cities.
“It’s fitting that the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, which was a truly cutting-edge idea of putting art outdoors in the city, now boasts the Walker’s first mobile app, putting interpretation in the hands and pockets of our visitors,” said Andrew Blauvelt, the Walker’s Chief of Communications and Audience Engagement. “Our pioneering Art on Call program that allows visitors to use their cellphones to access guided audio tours is also still available to Garden visitors, ensuring the broadest spectrum of access.”
