Sound Horizon: Julia Holter
6, 7, and 8 pm, Perlman Gallery
“An artist vividly committed to exploring new frontiers in a rewarding way.”
—BBC
Composer/keyboardist Julie Holter melds bedroom art-pop with avantgarde
composition and creates a world of heady atmospherics and darkly
melodic song craft. Her most recent recording was voted among Pitchfork’s
top albums of 2012. Exploring the interstitial spaces of live sound and
visual art, the in-gallery music series Sound Horizon showcases a number
of the most respected US composers and solo sonic adventurers. These
free 30-minute performances take place within the Walker galleries. Enjoy
free gallery admission on Thursday nights from 5 to 9 pm. Presented in
association with the American Composers Forum.
Studio Talk with Matt Connors and Matt Wolf
Walker Cinema, 7 pm
What does a director of documentaries learn from a painter, and vice
versa? Does it influence how they think about or make their own work?
Matt Wolf, one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent
Film,” interviews his friend Matt Connors, one of the artists featured in the
exhibition Painter Painter.
Connors is a New York–based artist who uses painting and abstraction to
pursue an open-ended and informal dialogue between form, style, material,
and meaning. His works explore questions, problems (and problemsolving),
and propositions rather than assertions or solutions, and draw
from the history of painting as well as the fields of language, music, and
design.
New York–based filmmaker and writer Wolf is currently developing an
unconventional historical film with the seminal punk author Jon Savage
based on his groundbreaking book Teenage. His previous works include
the award-winning feature documentary Wild Combination, about the
avant-garde cellist and disco producer Arthur Russell, which premiered at
the 2008 Berlin Film Festival. He has produced and directed short
documentaries for the New York Times and the series High Line Stories for
the Sundance Channel. Wolf is a graduate of New York University’s Film
School.

Opening-day Performance: The Exception and the Rule
Medtronic Gallery, 7 pm
As part of the exhibition, artists Karen Mirza and Brad Butler join Twin
Cites community members to interpret The Exception and the Rule, Bertolt
Brecht’s 1929 play that recounts a tale of corruption, exploitation, and
injustice—a tale with compelling parallels to today’s culture. Through this
and other “learning plays,” Brecht attempted to promote revolution and
make theater explicitly political by revealing its mechanics, breaking down
divisions between actors and audience, and making both into active
participants.

Teen Takeover: Where Art Thou?
Walker Art Center, 5-9 pm
People of all ages are invited to join the revelry as youths take over at the
Walker, populating spaces large and small with pop culture and surprises
still in the works. Take in—and take part in—art-making and music, along
with on-site projects by local artists: the whole of this annual spring
extravaganza, cooked up by the Teen Arts Council, is greater than the sum
of its parts. The event includes live performances by Bomba de Luz, dancers Iman and Khadijah, and Jaime Carrera.
