Studio Talk: Dianna Molzan and Alex Olson
Walker Cinema, 7 pm
Get an inside view of ways that artists are making the age-old medium of painting contemporary with Painter Painter artists Dianna Molzan and Alex Olson. Rather than deconstructing painting, Molzan says she’s “exploring and maximizing everything up for grabs inherent to it.” Olson focuses on making works “that prompt a desire to read, but without providing precise language to do so.”
Los Angeles–based Molzan received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2001) and an MFA from the University of Southern California (2009). She has had solo exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston (2012), the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2011), and her gallery, Overduin and Kite in Los Angeles (2009). Several of her works were included in the show All of this and nothing at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2011).
Olson, who also lives and works in Los Angeles, received a BA from Harvard University (2001) and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts (2008). She is represented by Lisa Cooley, New York; Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago; and Laura Bartlett Gallery, London. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.

Challenging Perspectives: Negotiating Spaces
Skyline Room, 5–9 pm
Art inspired by the Walker and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is featured at a free one-night exhibition. More than two dozen artists with developmental and/or physical disabilities recently took part in a program co-organized by the nonprofit Partnership Resources, which included curator-led tours of the Walker and the Garden. “Their spontaneous aesthetic choices delighted me,” says Art Lab coordinator Ilene Krug Mojsilov of the artists. “They were also refreshingly direct and intuitive in assessing both the Walker’s spaces and the art in our galleries.” Challenging Perspectives: Negotiating Spaces—a show featuring paintings, video, sculpture, and architectural models in an installation designed by ROLU—is open to the public on March 21 from 5 to 9 pm in the Skyline Room, during Target Free Thursday Nights.
Sound Horizon: Nate Wooley
Perlman Gallery, 6, 7, and 8 pm
“Nate Wooley is one of the most interesting and unusual trumpet players living today, and that is without hyperbole.” —Jazz trumpet master Dave Douglas
Combining vocalization, noise and drone, amplification and feedback, and compositional rigor, avant trumpeter Nate Wooley plugs in and turns it up to explore the outer reaches of his instrument miles beyond his predecessors.
Exploring the interstitial spaces of live sound and visual art, the in-gallery music series Sound Horizon showcases a number of the most respected US composers and solo sonic adventurers. These free 30-minute performances take place within the Walker galleries. Presented in association with the American Composers Forum.
Thursday, March 28
