WALKER ART CENTER INTERNET CAT VIDEO FESTIVAL
GOLDEN KITTY AWARDED TO THE ORIGINAL GRUMPY CAT
Minneapolis, August 28, 2013—The Walker Art Center presented the second Internet Cat Video Festival this evening at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand, drawing an audience over 10,000. The people’s choice award, the Golden Kitty, was presented to The Original Grumpy Cat. Grumpy responded to the honor with a characteristic “Whatever.”
Chosen by online voting of nearly 20,000 responses, the Golden Kitty was shown as the finale of the festival and was awarded by last year’s winner Will Braden, creator of Henri Le Chat Noir, and festival producer Scott Stulen of the Walker Art Center in front of a Minnesota State Fair Grandstand audience of over 10,000.

Drawing over 10,000 online nominations, the second edition of the Walker’s festival included videos submitted from around the world including Australia, Japan, Russia, UK, Canada, and all over the United States. As with last year the videos were divided into the categories of Comedy, Drama, Foreign, Animated, Musical and Documentary. New categories for this year included a Minnesota Created “Cat-on-a-Stick” and an inaugural group of seven Hall of Fame inductees including Keyboard Cat, Nyan, Henri Le Chat Noir, Lil BUB, Kittens Inspired by Kittens, Maru, and Boots and Cats. The festival closed with a countdown of the People’s Choice videos concluding with the Golden Kitty winner.

One of the most celebrated art museums in the country, the Walker Art Center is known for presenting today’s most compelling artists, as well as modern masters, including Andy Warhol, Matthew Barney, Jasper Johns, Yoko Ono, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Rothko, and Kara Walker. In addition to traveling exhibitions and its world-renowned collection, the Walker presents a broad array of contemporary music, dance, and theater, and the best in film from around the world and down the block. The Walker’s 11-acre Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is one of the country’s largest urban sculpture parks. At its center is the beloved Twin Cities landmark—the playful fountain-sculpture Spoonbridge and Cherry. The Garden features more than 40 works of art and the Cowles Conservatory.
The Walker Art Center is located at 1750 Hennepin Avenue—where Hennepin meets Lyndale—one block off Highways I-94 and I-394, in Minneapolis.
