THURSDAY, MAY 7

Chef In Residence: Irina Kolosov (Parma 8200)

Gather, 5-9PM

Top talents from Twin Cities restaurants create limited-edition small plates exclusively for this ongoing series—meet them on the first Thursday of every month for a tasting. In May, meet Irina Kolosov from Parma 8200, who will share samples from her featured menu.

Growing up Kolosov watched her mom cook every day. “Her food was always incredibly delicious and creative. My mom’s passion for interesting food inspired me to join The Art Institute International Minnesota to pursue an associate degree in the culinary industry.” While going to school she started an internship at Palomino and was soon hired as a pantry cook working 300+ covers for lunch. Less than 6 months later Kolosov received a call from Adam King at Café Lurcat, asking her to interview for a line cook position. In 2006, the same year she graduated from culinary school, Kolosov joined the D’Amico family. Four years later she was invited to help open Parma 8200 and quickly realized creating Italian food is where her heart belongs. “Few things make me happier than when I’m cooking pasta.”

Screening: Following by Christopher Nolan

Walker Cinema, 7PM

“A mind-bending psychological journey.” —Criterion Collection

In Nolan’s first feature film, a dark black-and-white noir thriller, a struggling writer wanders the streets of London searching for inspiration for his novel. Obsessed with fueling his creativity, he ends up entangled in a life of crime after meeting a burglar and accompanying him on his robberies. Nolan originally shot on 16mm stock and used mostly nonactors, carefully rehearsing scenes to limit the amount of takes and film costs. He successfully rendered his nonlinear narrative—a reoccurring device in his later work—on a micro budget. 1998, 69 minutes.

THURSDAY, MAY 14

Sound Horizon: Aki Onda

Walker Gallery

Exploring the interstitial spaces between live sound and visual art, the in-gallery music series Sound Horizon returns with one of the country’s most respected composers and sonic adventurers, Aki Onda. Intended for both close listening and moments of happenstance for gallery-goers, this free, aurally eclectic series features three short sets by Onda.

Aki Onda presents a “messy collage of deep reds and bright blues” (The Wire).

Aki Onda is an electronic musician, composer, and visual artist. He is particularly known for his Cassette Memories project – works compiled from a “sound diary” of field-recordings collected by Onda over a span of two decades. Onda’s musical instrument of choice is the cassette Walkman. Not only does he capture field recordings with the Walkman, he also physically manipulates multiple Walkmans with electronics in his performances. In another of his projects, Cinemage, Onda shows slide projections of still photo images, shot by himself, as a performance or installation. Onda has collaborated with artists such as Michael Snow, Ken Jacobs, Paul Clipson, Alan Licht, Loren Connors, MV Carbon, Oren Ambarchi, Noël Akchoté, Jean-François Pauvros, Jac Berrocal, Lionel Marchetti, Linda Sharrock, and Blixa Bargeld.

Screening: The Prestige by Christopher Nolan

Walker Cinema, 7PM

“A thrilling valentine to the art of illusion made by one of the master illusionists of our time—arguably Nolan’s most personal film.” —Film Society Lincoln Center

Two rival magicians (Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale) in 19th-century England work together as fake audience “volunteers” for a popular stage illusionist. When one makes a terrible mistake that affects the other, a lifelong hatred begins. As they search for the secret to the “Transported Man” trick, the audience must decide who is being deceived. 2006, 130 minutes.

Motionpoems

Walker Cinema, 6:30 and 8PM

What happens when great contemporary poems become scripts for indie filmmakers? Motionpoems’ 6th annual world premiere of 15 new short-shorts is the best way to find out. “Astonishing, powerful, and hilarious,” says Forbes. We say: pure poetry.

THURSDAY, MAY 28
