Saturday, August 4
10am–3pm
Walker Art Center, Free
Summer’s heating up, so come and show off your coolest moves in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden! Jam to children’s band the Pop Ups. Groove alongside Young Dance and BodyCartography. Make art. Live it up, it’s summer!
Free First Saturdays feature free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month, plus performances, games, art-making, and kids’ films from 10 am to 3 pm. Family friendly food options are available or bring something from home to snack on in the lounge or in the garden.
Performance: The Pop Ups
12 pm
Dance to the Pop Ups, two-time Grammy nominees who have toured with Yo Gabba Gabba Live and performed on Sesame Street. Famous for their inventive, high energy performances and signature puppets, they’ll transport family audiences into a whimsical world with dancing robots, a fire-stomping rhino, and a costume party. This interactive show will propel both young and old out of their seats!
Art-Making
Waves Enfolding: A Paper Memorial
10 am–3 pm
Learn how to fold a simple paper boat and help build a collection of 1,000 as part of poet and book artist Anh-Hoa Thi Nguyen’s paper memorial commemorating the lives lost during the Vietnamese refugee waves of 1954 and 1975–1992. Your boat will become part of an honoring and healing ritual on Lake Phalen on the last day of the Floating Library (August 5, 2018).
Art-Making: Sand Painting
10 am–3 pm
Try your hand at sand painting (rangoli) in this activity led by COMPAS artist Shakun Maheshwari. Rangolidesigns are a floor art that people in India recreate daily to bring good luck and happiness to the home. Create stylized designs with colored sand, to be displayed temporarily in the Garden.
Performance: Young Dance and BodyCartography Project
10 am–3 pm
The youth dancers from Young Dance will perform Action Movie, a work choreographed by BodyCartography Project. This one-on-one performance piece is “designed to activate our sensing bodies to connect fully with the places we are.” Experience the Garden as you never have before!
Music: Douala Soul Collective
10 am–3 pm
Get loose with Douala Soul Collective, two DJs whose music choices are influenced by the city of Douala, Cameroon. They are travelers who share their ethnic-Afro roots, plus their eclectic collection of vinyls.
