Artist Talk: Justin Shoulder, future folklore
Saturday, April 27, 12pm
Bentson Mediatheque, Free

Join Justin Shoulder for a lecture-presentation highlighting components of his work Carrion in relation to his broader artistic practice. In addition to showing one of his “fantastic creatures,” Shoulder will discuss the evolution of his collective’s future folklore, a framework which draws together Filipino ancestral myth, motifs drawn from the queer club experience, and collective and communal re-imaginings as a way of crafting and enacting new narratives.

Justin Shoulder works in live performance, photography, and video and is known for spectacular performances developed in Sydney’s underground queer performance scene. They are based around his highly developed “fantastic creatures,” invented beings and alter-egos based on mythology, fables, and fantasy forms. These creatures are embodied through intricately crafted costumes and movement, with full-body suits, prostheses, and masks. Shoulder uses his body and craft to forge connections between queer, migrant, spiritual, and intercultural experiences. He is a founding member of queer artist collective Glitter Militia and cofounder of Club Ate with collaborator Bhenji Ra. Shoulder’s works have been presented across Australia and internationally, including Perth Institute of Contemporary Art; Performance Space, Sydney; Arts House, Melbourne; Fusebox Festival, Texas; Museum MACAN, Jakarta Indonesia; Roskilde Festival, Denmark; and the Singapore Art Museum.
