Winter at the Walker Returns with Snowshoeing in the Sculpture Garden and Cozy Indoor Art Exploration

Celebrate winter and the Walker’s collection by experiencing the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden on snowshoes provided by the University of Minnesota Center for Outdoor Adventure.

Snowshoers are encouraged to explore the Sculpture Garden using the Bloomberg Connects app launching at Snowshoes and Artists’ Books on January 26. The app, available as a free download on the Apple App Store and Google Play, connects users with audio and visual resources to enhance their Sculpture Garden visitOur partnership with Bloomberg Connects represents an exciting next step in expanding offsite and onsite engagement with the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and beyond.

Activities are subject to change or cancellation. Please note: snowshoeing is weather permitting and will be canceled if temperatures are projected to be below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Please check back for updates, details, and COVID-19 guidelines as the program approaches. 

 

Thursday night snowshoeing will take place between 5pm and 8:30 pm; quantities and sizes are limited. Pre-registration for snowshoes is required. 

After your trek, visit the Walker Library for a rare close-up look at treasures from the Rosemary Furtak Collection of more than 2,000 artists’ books, multiples, zines, mail art, and ephemera.

Former Walker librarian Rosemary Furtak described artists’ books as books that do not behave like books. Join us in the library for a chance to view and discuss what makes an artist book. We will have a selection available by artists including Tauba Auerbach, Stanley Brouwn, and Ed Ruscha. Library capacity of 20 people at a time.

Snowshoes and Mail Art

Mail Art was born out of artists’ desire to make their work more visible and accessible without having to rely on galleries or museums. Join us in the library as we view and discuss what mail art is. We will have works on view by Ray Johnson, David E. Thompson (Davi Det Hompson), and May Wilson. Library capacity of 20 people at a time.

Snowshoes and Art in Multiples

Does an artwork need to be unique? Many artists have examined this question. We will explore editioned works by artists such as Joseph Beuys, Trisha Donnelly, and Wolf Vostell. Library capacity of 20 people at a time.

 

Free First Saturday: Snow Day Hooray

Get out your snow pants and cozy PJs, and cancel your plans—we’re calling a Walker snow day! Borrow a pair of snowshoes and brave the cold for some outdoor exploration or get cozy indoors with art-making, story time, and more fun inspired by Minnesota’s favorite unofficial winter holiday.

Free First Saturday also features free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month. Gallery admission tickets are available on-site on the event day from the Main Lobby desk; quantities are limited. Free admission 10 am–5 pm, activities 10 am–3 pm. 

No reservation required; snowshoes are available on a first-come-first-served basis, sizes and quantities are limited. Activities are subject to change or cancellation. Snowshoes are weather-dependent and may be canceled for extreme cold or if there is not enough snow. Please check back for updates, details, and COVID-19 guidelines as the program approaches.
