This November, iconoclastic choreographer Nadia Beugré returns to the Walker for the first time since 2012 with Quartiers Libre Revisited. In an unbridled experience that bends the boundaries between performer and audience, Beugré commands the stage, piled high with disposed plastic water bottles, and roams beyond it. This expanded version of Beugré’s solo Quartiers Libre (Free Rein), seen on the Walker stage in 2012, features the artist alongside two performers from her home country of Côte d’Ivoire. Together, they navigate spaces of restriction and possibility, exploring themes of personal freedom as a planetary plague of waste threatens.

ABOUT NADIA BEUGRÉ
Born in Ivory Coast, Nadia Beugré made her first appearance as a member of Dante Theatre in 1995. Following training at Germaine Acogny’s Ecole des sables in Senegal, she joined Ex.e.r.ce., Mathilde Monnier’s program for talented, up-and-coming choreographers at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Montpellier in 2009. She soon staged productions of her own, including the still-touring solo Quartiers libres (‘Free Rein’) in 2012. Her work merges traditional folk dances, contemporary experimental dance, and urban/hip-hop influences.
Since 2021, Beugré has been an associate artist to the Briqueterie in Vitry-sur-Seine (France) and, since 2023, an associate artist to ICI CCN de Montpellier. With Virginie Dupray, Beugré founded her own dance company in Montpellier, Libr’Arts, a platform for production, touring, and training between France and Ivory Coast.
