Free First Saturday: Movement in the City
Saturday, November 2, 10 am–3 pm
From wheels spinning to wings flapping, in a city you can find movement almost anywhere you look. Wiggle your way to this Free First Saturday and help us decide: When does movement turn into dance?

This month’s activities include interactive dance performances by Young Dance and yoga workshops by Shontel Booker of Dream in Color Healing Yoga Studio. Contribute to a community collage featuring all that moves in our city, and make your own piece of art that can move and dance with you.

Free First Saturday features free gallery admission on the first Saturday of every month. Gallery admission tickets are available in advance online and on-site on the event day from the Main Lobby desk. Free admission 10 am–5 pm; activities 10 am–3 pm.

Art Club: Giant Poems
Thursday, November 7, 5–8 pm
Join us for Art Club, a standing invitation to explore and create across our campus. Stop by the Art Lab for drop-in artmaking with Walker educators. Every week is a chance to experiment with a new medium, idea, or muse. Activity instructions, available in English and Spanish, are designed for ages 4 and up. Materials are provided and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis; supplies are limited. No prior registration is required for Art Club—the more you visit, the more you’ll discover.

Make customized and oversized poetry magnets this week at Art Club. Craft your creation to take with you, or exchange with other visitors to see what kind of poems emerge on the community magnet wall.

Strangers Meeting Strangers: Life After Awakening
Thursday, November 7, 6 pm
Inspired by the recently opened exhibition Sophie Calle: Overshare, which examines identity, intimacy, and blurring the lines between public and private, join an exchange of experiences at Strangers Meeting Strangers, a three-part conversation series.

Over three consecutive Thursday nights, moderators offer the prompts of past, present, and future to initiate connections and banter among strangers. Each evening creates a culminating experience that brings people together. You only need the courage to show up. Together, we’ll create the rest.

Night 3 centers hope, aspirations, and plans for the future. Activities include a goal-setting workshop, vision board stations, and talks about personal and community aspirations. Everyone is invited to listen, and further participation is optional. Gather in the Cargill Lounge.

Sensory Friendly Sunday Nov 2024
Sunday, November 10, 8–11 am
Sensory Friendly Sunday is a monthly event designed for kids, teens, and adults with sensory processing differences, autism spectrum disorder, or developmental disabilities. The galleries will be closed to the general public, allowing visitors to enjoy the museum in a calm environment with accommodations such as quiet spaces, fidgets, and sunglasses available. Experience a selection of current exhibitions, make art with Teaching Artist Pablo Helm Hernandez, or watch a short film. All friends and family members are welcome.

To support the health and safety of visitors at increased risk for COVID-19, masks are required at Sensory Friendly Sunday for visitors over age 2. Accommodations are available if someone in your party is unable to tolerate masking. Please email access@walkerart.org or call 612-375-7561 for more information.

This program was created in consultation with the Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM) and the University of Minnesota’s Occupational Therapy Program.

Art Club: Found Footage & Cameraless Filmmaking with Rhayne Vermette
Thursday, November 21, 5–8 pm
Did you know that one can make films without the use of a camera? In this workshop, visiting filmmaker Rhayne Vermette will repurpose old 16mm films and incorporate scratching, drawing, and other manipulative collage-like methods to create new works, often called “found footage” films created with direct animation techniques. Individual film-strip segments created by participants will then be spliced together, or joined, to create a short camera-less movie that will be projected on 16mm at the workshop’s conclusion.

Activity instructions, available in English and Spanish, are designed for ages 4 and up. Materials are provided and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis; supplies are limited. No prior registration is required for Art Club—the more you visit, the more you’ll discover.

This workshop is presented in conjunction with the exhibition This Must Be the Place: Inside the Walker’s Collection, where Vermette’s film Extraits d’une Famille (Excerpts of a Family) is on view. View more of her films recently acquired in the Ruben/Bentson Moving Image Collection with the artist present in the Walker Cinema the following day, Friday, November 22, at 7 pm, during the program Our Winnipeg, Our Selves.
