Grammy Winner Caroline Shaw and Sō Percussion Bring Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part to the McGuire Theater

A group of five musicians stand on stage, awash in purple light. A woman in a jumpsuit plays the keyboard and sings in the center of the photo.

On October 19, Caroline Shaw and Sō Percussion will visit the Walker’s McGuire Theater to perform from their collaborative projects Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part (2021) and Rectangles and Circumstance (2024). Shaw, a Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winner, is best known for her radiantly exploratory music that straddles the worlds of classical and pop music. She joins forces with the Sō Percussion quartet for an evening of transcendent rhythm and vocals. Finding inspiration in wide-ranging sources, from Emily Dickinson to ABBA, their songs journey between tightly crafted orchestrations and inspired spontaneity, creating a sonic world that feels fresh and ecstatic.

Copresented with Schubert Club Mix.

ABOUT SŌ PERCUSSION
For 20 years and counting, Sō Percussion has redefined chamber music for the 21st century through an “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam” (New Yorker). They are celebrated by audiences and presenters for live performances that bring to life the vibrant percussion repertoire; for an extravagant array of collaborations in classical music, pop, indie rock, contemporary dance, and theater; and for their work in education and community, creating opportunities and platforms for music and artists that explore the immense possibility of art in our time.

Recent highlights have included performances at the Elbphilharmonie, Big Ears 2022, where they performed Amid the Noise, premiered a new work by Angélica Negrón with the Kronos Quartet, and performed Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part with Caroline Shaw. Their Nonesuch recording, Narrow Sea, with Caroline Shaw, Dawn Upshaw, and Gilbert Kalish, won the 2022 Grammy for Best Composition.
