“A fierce tide of feeling—rage and despair, love and hope and exaltation.” —New York Times
Grammy winner Meshell Ndegeocello brings her 2024 album No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin to the Walker this December. A forerunner of the neo-soul movement, Ndegeocello traverses genres in her work. In No More Water, jazz and gospel come to the fore as she delivers a theatrical live rendition of the album released on its namesake’s 100th birthday. Ndegeocello’s songs pose existential questions about love and collective understanding in the celebratory and transformative musical experience that draws on traditions of worship and testimony.
Presented in association with the Dakota.

ABOUT MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO
Meshell Ndegeocello eschews genre for originality, celebrity for longevity, and musical trends for musical truths. Fans have come to expect the unexpected and follow her on sojourns into soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, and rock, all bound by the search for love, justice, respect, and resolution. These sonic investigations have defied and redefined the expectations for women, queer artists, and Black music for over 30 years; she remains one of few women who write the music, sing, and lead the band.
A bass player above all else, Meshell brings her warm, melodic groove to everything she does. She’s received a Grammy award along with numerous nominations and has played alongside the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Alanis Morrisette, James Blood Ulmer, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Tony Allen, John Medeski, Billy Preston, and Chaka Khan. She credits her bass-playing influences to Sting, Jaco Pastorius, Family Man Barrett, and Stevie Wonder.
