The Walker-commissioned Gunpowder Plot took place in the summer of 1975, across Vineland Place, on the site where the sculpture garden was later installed. I invited members of the public to participate in the two works, Starburst and Maze, by standing at various nodes of linear patterns laid out on the grass. Each “line” of the pattern was covered in gunpowder. A “feeder” line was ignited and the powder furiously erupted, racing along the lines, towards each participant. Those with stout hearts stood their ground, while others jumped out of the way.
