My aunt, pictured here in a government propaganda photograph, with a print of the Franz Marc painting I’d later see at the Walker. Kay, an American citizen, was held at Manzanar, a concentration camp in California, during World War II. To secure her release she agreed to accept $25 and a one-way bus ticket east of the Mississippi. This image of Kay shows her in NYC, in her new apartment near Radio City Music Hall, after leaving her parents and siblings behind.
