This is Betty Nelsen, artist and gallery guard, maker of many fabulous cakes (and currently living in Davis, California). She is standing in the Walker conference room with the cake she made for the opening of the exhibition Calder’s Universe.

The cake was a replica of “The Flying Colors of the United States,” a Braniff Airlines Boeing 727 designed by Alexander Calder. In a publicity stunt, the Walker delivered the cake to the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport where it met the Braniff plane, an affair illustrated in this series of photos.
