Njeri Githire

Born and raised in Kenya, Professor Githire holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nantes (West of France), a Master’s from the University of Paris, and a doctorate from the Pennsylvania State University. Professor Githire teaches courses in African literature, cinema and popular culture at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

Reign of the Hyenas: The Dark Satire of Djibril Diop Mambéty

Hyenas, Djibril Diop Mambéty’s biting satire from 1992, tells the story of a former sex worker returning to an economically devastated village and her sinister plot for revenge against a past lover. Njeri Githire, associate professor of African American & African Studies at the University of Minnesota, writes on Mambéty’s 30-year filmic career, which criticized neocolonialist structures, capitalist society, and consumer culture.
