Stemming from the Latin genus, meaning a kind or species, genre denotes a classification based on observable similarities. Although many artists have coined their own genres and movements in which to place their work, such as the surrealists or industrial music, others have their art labeled by forces outside their control.

The series Genre Non Grata explores the often-fraught relationship between artists and categorizations. From musical genres in a post-streaming world to artists shifting between galleries and the performing arts, Genre Non Grata considers the limits and potentials for rethinking the ways artists and their work are categorized.
